\ DR. RAJIV JAIN, chief of staff at the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center, recently was appointed associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
In addition to his job at the VA, Jain will work with UVa students who are residents at the Salem hospital.
\ ROBERT A. JAMIE of Salem has earned membership in Modern Woodmen of America 1993 District Manager Round Table.
Jamie was selected for outstanding leadership and high achievement in life insurance sales.
\ JIM SMALLWOOD of Roanoke has been named director of corporate energy and project sourcing for Owens-Corning.
Smallwood, who joined Owens-Corning in 1977, graduated from Clemson University in 1974 with a degree in administrative management and earned a master's degree from Furman University in 1981.
\ UNITED WAY OF THE ROANOKE VALLEY has named the following winners in its 10th annual Employee Communication Contest: WDBJ, employee publications category, for a United Way information pamphlet; Crestar Bank, audio-visual programs category, for a video recognizing employee participation; Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, campaign communications category, for its "United Way Week"; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia, special events category, for its version of "Let's Make a Deal" and the photography category, for color photographs of its campaign kickoff.
\ ALVIN B. FINK, chief executive officer of Fink's Jewelers, has been inducted into the National Jeweler Retailer Hall of Fame. He has served as president of Jewelers of America, vice president of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, chairman of the Jewelry Industry Council, president of the Diamond Council of America and lifetime honorary director of the Virginia Retail Jewelers Association.
He is on the advisory board of NationsBank of Roanoke and formerly served on the boards of several other banks and civic organizations, including the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Roanoke Merchants Association.
\ ACME BUSINESS MACHINES INC. of Roanoke received the Global Leader, dealer of the year award, during the recent 1994 Mita National Sales Meeting.
Mita honors its outstanding dealers with awards based on sales and service performance during the fiscal year.
\ TRIPP GODSEY, an associate distributor in Roanoke for Safeguard Business Systems Inc., recently was selected for membership in Safeguard's 1994 President's Club.
Godsey has been in his position for four years and is responsible for distributing accounting and office efficiency systems to professionals and small businesses in Roanoke and the New River Valley.
\ ALLEN M. BOSTIAN, son of Robert and Katherine Bostian of Roanoke, has been selected by the Rotary Club of Virginia Beach to be a district governor representative of Team Netherlands.
Bostian, a graduate of Cave Spring High School, is fitness director of Virginia Beach General Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Fitness Center. He will attend a series of cardiac fitness seminars in The Netherlands this spring.
\ RITA DAVID, radiography program head at Virginia Western Community College, received a life membership at the recent meeting of The Appalachian District Society of Radiologic Technologists.
David is parliamentarian of the Virginia Society of Radiologic Technicians.
\ HAYES, SEAY, MATTERN & MATTERN, INC., has announced the recipients of it's 1993 Bonus Award Opportunity Program. The winners are: Drake Anderson, Gloria Burleigh, Wayne Dalton, Kyle Dobbins, Lynwood Epperly, Bill Gregory, David Henderson, Lucinda Jennings, Jennifer Kelly, Kamran Khalilan, Troy Kincer, Mary Jane McMillen, Sandy Nester, Mike Salmon, Onai Saunders, Eric Sigrist and Priscilla Welcer, all of Roanoke.
The award is an in-house program to recognize outstanding employees who are evaluated on the basis of performance, initiative, judgment, proficiency and attitude.
\ JOHN R. McADEN, a vice president for Balzer and Associates, Inc., Planners, Architects, Engineers and Surveyors, has met the Virginia requirements to become a land surveyor.
McAden joined the firm nine years ago in the Chesterfield office.
\ JODIE R. CAPLAN, director of internal audit for Carilion Health System, has passed the international certified internal auditor examination.
Of the 2,545 candidates worldwide who recently took the exam, 538 passed and became certified internal auditors.
\ WILLIAM H. SPENCER III and WALTER J. BAUMOEL, employees of The Franklin Life Insurance Company, recently were recognized as top agency associates.
Baumoel, an insurance executive, and Spencer, a general agent, were named to membership in the Franklin Million Dollar Conference. The conference is an organization of national sales and sales management leaders.
Spencer was also named to membership in Franklin's Centurion Club, an organization of the company's most successful sales associates.
\ H.C. "PEE WEE" BECKNER was awarded a fellowship in the Order of the Isosceles by the Blue Ridge chapter of the Professional Construction Estimators Association of America.
Members in the order support young people in their construction industry education. Beckner was given the honor for his outstanding service to the industry and the PCEA.
Beckner is a 40-year veteran of the construction industry and a member of the Blue Ridge chapter board of directors for PCEA.
\ DR. DARREL F. POWLEDGE, of Lewis-Gale Clinic Inc., recently received his board certification as a specialist in occupational medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine Inc.
Powledge has practiced at Lewis-Gale Clinic since 1987.
\ JUDY L. SHAFFER, daughter of Harold and Jerry Shaffer of Roanoke, recently passed all portions of the Vermont Certified Public Accounting examination. She is a 1989 graduate of Roanoke College.
\ BARBARA M. THORNHILL recently was awarded the Secretary's Hands and Heart Award by the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The annual award recognizes sustained, compassionate and thoughtful patient care. Thornhill is an acute medical nurse.
\ ADIA PERSONNEL SERVICES of Roanoke has received the organization's President's Club award.
The award is given to the top 10 producing franchises in the organization. Lynn Miller of the Roanoke franchise accepted the award.
\ CHARLES R. SHRADER of Roanoke recently received a SAMMY award from the Sales and Marketing Executives of Richmond. The award recognizes his accomplishments as a regional sales manager for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia in 1993.
