Roberta Johnson, a teacher and coordinator of the project, said the grant will be used to create a butterfly garden as both an educational tool and community beautification effort. The Bent Mountain Women's Club, civic league and Boy Scouts will also contribute to the project.
Businesses and private individuals also are donating money and materials to the garden. Students, who are growing plants in their classrooms, will plant them at a dedication Friday, which is Earth Day.
The school was selected from nearly 900 children's gardening programs nationwide for the award.
