SUPERSPEEDWAY PLANNED FOR CALIFORNIA

Southern California racing fans, waiting more than a decade for someone to build a superspeedway to take the place of defunct Ontario Motor Speedway, may be close to realizing their dream.

Penske Speedway Inc., part of the business empire of Roger Penske, and Kaiser Resources Inc., an environmental resources company, announced Wednesday an agreement to develop The California Speedway, near Fontana in San Bernardino County.

Plans call for a track to be built on approximately 500 acres of Kaiser's former steel-manufacturing mill site near the intersection of Interstates 10 and 15, not far from Ontario, once a scheduled environmental cleanup is completed.

Penske Speedway Inc., which owns and operates Michigan International Speedway and Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania, would operate the facility and have an 80 percent interest. Kaiser would retain a 20 percent interest.
