FEWER HAVE DIED ON STATE ROADS SO FAR IN 1994

More motorists are buckling up, resulting in fewer traffic fatalities for the first quarter of 1994, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles reported Thursday.

Preliminary figures show that 167 people were killed in traffic wrecks during the first quarter of the year, down 18 from 185 fatalities during the same period in 1993.

The number of wrecks remains virtually unchanged between the two years, but because of the increased use of safety belts, ``more people are being saved,'' said DMV spokeswoman Karen Scales.

Of the 167 fatalities reported, 78 were not wearing safety belts, 45 were wearing safety belts, 26 were pedestrians, motorcyclists or bicyclists and 18 were undetermined.
