By then, though, the peanut empire was a memory and Grammer was the 48-year-old president of Rusco Window Company Inc., a business he started in Roanoke with partner Alton Robertson in 1947. Grammer, who built the company on the sale of a new idea at the time - metal storm windows - died Tuesday in a Roanoke hospital of congestive heart failure. He was 79.
Rusco Windows has been through some changes over the years but has remained a strong company - a fact that mirrors Grammer's personality, according to his son-in-law and the president of the company, Jim Brock.
"He was a deeply religious man, and that had an impact on the business," Brock added. "He wanted to raise the level of the home-improvement industry to a higher plane using professionalism and ethics, and he did that using a low-key style."
Grammer served as superintendent of the Greene Memorial United Methodist Church school for 14 years.
Brock said the company will close today in observance of Grammer's funeral. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
He leaves behind his wife, Marguerite, and two daughters.
