Caldwell struck out 11 en route to a five-hitter for the Mountaineers. Mark Freeland gave up six hits in a losing effort for Northside (7-2-1).

In Daleville, Gary Tyree hit a two-run homer in the second inning to go with a double and single to lead Rockbridge County past Lord Botetourt 7-3 in a Blue Ridge district game. Tyree also got the save to preserve Jimmy Emore's victory. Dwayne Hickman was 3-for-4 with four RBI for the Wildcats (5-5, 1-1). Ricky Gluth had two doubles for Lord Botetourt (5-2-1, 0-1-1).
Shawsville downed Galax 10-0 in a Mountain Empire District game on the losers' field as Tony Maxey struck out six, gave up three hits and walked one in a game shortened to six innings. Designated hitter Kevin Mann collected two hits in four trips while driving in two runs. The Shawnees are 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the district while Galax drops to 2-8, 0-3.
In Riner, Auburn smashed Rocky Gap 14-2 in a Mountain Empire District game as Bradley Hudgins allowed just two hits in four innings. The Eagles (4-6, 2-1) were led offensively by John Lyton, who knocked in two runs with two hits, and Bryce Duncan knocked in three runs with a double.
Floyd County handed Grayson County its first Mountain Empire District loss with an 11-5 victory in Floyd. The Buffaloes (8-2, 2-1) were led by Peter Bucklin who had two hits in four trips including a homer to knock in two runs. He also scored three runs. Monty Moran had three hits including a homer and two RBI. Sammy Burton, the winning pitcher who struck out the final five hitters, also homered with two men on in the first inning. Burton had 10 strikeouts.
Grayson County (2-1 in the district) was led by Bobby Cheeks, who homered and had three hits to knock in three runs.
At Bland, Narrows defeated Bland 15-5 in a Mountain Empire District game as Cory McGlothlin went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Jeff White and Justin Rhodes homered for the Green Wave (7-2, 2-0). Bland (1-6, 0-1) was led by Monty Matthews and Kory King with homers.
\ SOFTBALL: At Covington, Alleghany battered Northside 7-2 in a Blue Ridge District as Joy Gauthier got the victory on a four-hitter while striking out five. She gave up only two runs. Alleghany (3-6 overall, 1-1 in the district) was led offensively by Michelle Hemp who had two hits with one RBI while Gauthier also knocked in two runs. Teresa Harris had two hits for the losers.
In Martinsville, North Cross slugged Carlisle 29-12 in a Blue Ridge Conference game as winning pitcher Blair Calvert went 5-for-5 with three doubles, two triples and seven RBI. Lisa Betts also had four hits for the Raiders (6-3, 4-0). Carlisle is 3-3 and 2-2.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: At River's Edge, Roanoke Catholic defeated Magna Vista 3-1 as Shane Duddy scored two goals while freshman Mark Buchy scored the other. Catholic is 4-5. Magna Vista took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Marty Stanley.
