INDIANS OVERTAKE DEMONS

Blacksburg came from behind twice to beat Christiansburg 6-5 in a New River District baseball showdown Friday on the winners' field.

The Indians (3-7 overall, 1-1 in the district) trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. They scored three runs as Brian Smith singled in two runs and Shane Beamer's suicide squeeze made it 3-2.

In the seventh, Christiansburg scored three runs on two walks, singles by Donnie Tawney and Ryan Hubble and two fielder's choices to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Blacksburg got a walk and an infield error. Travis White's two-run double tied the game and one-out later Brian Smith singled in the winning run.

Christiansburg's Denny Self struck out eight in the first six innings while Smith struck out nine in 5 innings. Neither pitcher finished the game.

In other baseball:

Cave Spring tied Franklin County for the lead in the Roanoke Valley District with a 9-2 victory.

The Knights (8-3, 5-1) had Robey Caldwell pitch a four-hitter for the victory while striking out eight.

Chad Smith homered, drove in two runs went 3-for-4 to lead a nine-hit attack. Kevin Davis also hit his fourth homer, and Rober Kaczmarek doubled and knocked in two runs.

Franklin County (7-3, 5-1) got two unearned runs. The teams have split two games and meet for the third time in Rocky Mount on May 10.

In Hillsville, Carroll County (8-3, 1-1) defeated Radford 15-6 as Willie Bryant smacked a three-run homer and drove in four runs; Brian Hawks had two doubles and a single in four trips to knock in three runs; Ashley Primm doubled and singled to knock in three runs; Eric Carroll tripled and singled in four trips to knock in two runs. Radford (6-8, 1-1) was led by Ryan Brittle, Mark Franklin and Matt Linkous who all had two hits.

Shawsville downed Galax 10-0 in a Mountain Empire District game on the losers' field as Tony Maxey struck out six, gave up three hits and walked one in a game shortened to six innings. Designated hitter Kevin Mann collected two hits in four trips while driving in two runs. The Shawnees are 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the district. Galax is 2-8 and 0-3.

In Riner, Auburn smashed Rocky Gap 14-2 in a Mountain Empire District game as Bradley Hudgins allowed two hits in four innings. The Eagles (4-6, 2-1) were led offensively by John Lyton, who knocked in two runs with two hits, and Bryce Duncan knocked in three runs with a double.

Floyd County handed Grayson County its first Mountain Empire District loss with an 11-5 victory in Floyd. The Buffaloes (8-2, 2-1) were led by Peter Bucklin who had two hits in four trips, including a homer, to knock in two runs. He also scored three runs. Monty Moran had three hits including a homer and two RBI. Sammy Burton, the winning pitcher who struck out the final five hitters, also homered with two men on in the first inning. Burton had 10 strikeouts.

Grayson County (2-1 in the district) was led by Bobby Cheeks, who homered and had three hits to knock in three runs.

At Bland, Narrows defeated Bland 15-5 in a Mountain Empire District game as Cory McGlothlin went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Jeff White and Justin Rhodes homered for the Green Wave (7-2, 2-0). Bland (1-6, 0-1) was led by Monty Matthews and Kory King with homers.

\ SOFTBALL: In Hillsville, Becky Quesenberry went 2-for-3 and Gina Hill (2-0) picked up the victory as Carroll County beat John Battle 7-3 in a non-district game. The Cavaliers are 5-2; John Battle is 4-3.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Lynchburg in the Southwest Virginia Soccer Classic, Blacksburg defeated Group AAA E.C. Glass 2-1 on goals by Steve Cherry and Gregg Adamo that gave the Indians (7-0-1) took a 2-0 lead. Both of those were assisted by Mark Decker. E.C. Glass (2-2) got a goal from Adam Webb with five minutes left.

In the second game, North Cross defeated Heritage 3-0 on goals by Mark Wise, Parker Moore and John Prillaman. The Raiders are 7-1-2 and will face E.C. Glass this afternoon.
