TECH STREAK ENDS ON ROAD

South Florida, the nation's 21st-ranked baseball team, brought an abrupt halt to Virginia Tech's 10-game winning streak Friday night in Tampa, Fla.

Freshman Mark Roberts took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and earned the victory with relief help in the ninth as the Bulls beat the Hokies 12-2 in the Metro Conference. Roberts gave up five hits and three walks in eight innings, striking out seven.

Tech (22-18, 6-6) scored its runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Josh Herman and Bo Durkac.

Jason Michonski, Bob Ribinski and Rich Bruney homered for South Florida (33-11, 8-2).

In Lexington, VMI pounded out 29 hits in sweeping a baseball doubleheader from Howard 11-1 and 16-4.

Ryan Glynn homered in each game for the Keydets and finished 3-for-5 for the afternoon with four RBI. Franco Martin belted a three-run homer and was 4-for-5 in the second game with five RBI.

Jay Adams and Mark Hazlewood earned the victories for VMI (17-24).

In Lexington, East Tennessee State used a 1-2 finish in the 10,000 meters and a win in the long jump to take the lead after the first day of the Southern Conference men's track and field championships.

The Buccaneers have 39 points entering today's final events. VMI is second with 36 points, followed by Appalachian State (31), Western Carolina (23), Marshall (12), Furman (8) and The Citadel (6). Davidson and Tennessee-Chattanooga failed to score.

VMI's Fritz Ligday was second in the hammer throw, Demond Ferebee took second in the javelin and Damon Richardson finished second in the long jump.

Cathy Dixon of Virginia Tech was named to the 1994 All-Metro Conference women's tennis team announced Friday. Dixon went 12-19 in singles and 13-18 in doubles while helping Tech to a fourth-place finish at the Metro championship in Charlotte, N.C., last weekend.

Ilona Poljakova of Virginia Commonwealth was named the Metro's Most Valuable Player and South Florida's Sherry Bedingfield was selected coach of the year in voting among the league's coaches.
