PH GIRLS DEFEAT KNIGHTS

Cave Spring scored the first goal this season against Patrick Henry, but it wasn't enough as the Patriots won 3-1 on Friday night in a meeting of girls' soccer powers at Cave Spring Junior High School.

Emily Bryant scored two goals and Carrie Moore added one for Patrick Henry (7-0), which had held six opponents to a total of six shots.

The Knights (6-1) mustered six shots, including a goal by Lynn Moore. Heather Krause kept Cave Spring in the game by making 15 saves.

In other girls' soccer:

Thursday at River's Edge, North Cross scored a 3-0 victory over Roanoke Catholic on goals by Emily Cook, Whitfield Mastin and Katherine Kelly. The Raiders are 4-4-1; the Celtics 2-4-1.

\ BASEBALL: Cave Spring tied Franklin County for the lead in the Roanoke Valley District with a 9-2 victory at the Knights' field. Robey Caldwell pitch a four-hitter, striking out eight for Cave Spring (8-3, 5-1).

Chad Smith homered, drove in two runs and went 3-for-4 to lead a nine-hit attack. Kevin Davis also hit his fourth homer, and Robert Kaczmarek doubled and knocked in two runs.

Franklin County (7-3, 5-1) scored two unearned runs. The teams have split two games and meet for the third time May 10 in Rocky Mount.

In Vinton, William Byrd edged Salem 5-4 in a Blue Ridge District game as Chris Carr hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Mike McGuire was the winning pitcher for William Byrd (10-0, 2-0) and also homered in the fourth inning. Salem, which had a 4-1 lead at one time, is to 1-1-1 in the district.

Alleghany scored three unearned runs and rode the pitching of Nolan Caldwell to a 5-3 victory over Northside in a Blue Ridge District game. Caldwell struck out 11 en route to a five-hitter for the Mountaineers. Mark Freeland gave up six hits in a losing effort for Northside (7-2-1).

In Daleville, Gary Tyree hit a two-run homer in the second inning to go with a double and a single, leading Rockbridge County past Lord Botetourt 7-3 in a Blue Ridge district game. Tyree also got the save. Dwayne Hickman was 3-for-4 with four RBI for the Wildcats (5-5, 1-1). Ricky Gluth had two doubles for Lord Botetourt (5-2-1, 0-1-1).

At Maher Field, Patrick Henry defeated William Fleming 14-4 in five innings. Seth Callis struck out nine and walked one to get the victory. The Patriots (2-7, 2-3) had 15 hits. Al Holland Jr. double and tripled for Fleming (2-8, 1-5).

At North Cross, the Raiders edged Fishburne Military 6-5 in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Scott Hayes was the winning pitcher, leaving the game with a 6-1 lead after six innings because of a sore arm. He had struck out nine and given up two hits. North Cross (2-7, 2-5) was led by Brad Densmore with two hits with three RBI.

In Moneta, Richard Skinnell went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Dwight Orange was 2-for-4 and drove in a run as Staunton River kept Altavista winless, beating the Colonels 7-4 in the Seminole District.

The Golden Eagles are 4-5 overall and in the district; Altavista is 0-9.

In Buchanan, Craig County defeated James River 5-3 in a Pioneer District game as Ben Boardwine got the victory on a seven-hitter. Catcher Kristopher Peters went 3-for-4 with two doubles. He also threw out three runners. Craig County is 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the district.

\ SOFTBALL: In Buchanan, James River (9-1, 3-0) hammered Craig County 23-6 in a Pioneer District game as sisters Heather Vines and Amber Vines each had four hits. Heather Vines knocked in four runs with a homer and Amber Vines knocked in three.

In Covington, Alleghany battered Northside 7-2 in the Blue Ridge District as Joy Gauthier got the victory on a four-hitter, striking out five. Alleghany (3-6, 1-1) was led offensively by Michelle Hemp, who had two hits and one RBI; Gauthier also knocked in two runs.

Keri Whitney went 4-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBI, and Shannon Slovensky pitched a one-hitter as Cave Spring cruised past William Fleming 12-1 in the Roanoke Valley District. Slovensky struck out six for the Knights (6-4, 1-1).

At River's Edge, Patrick Henry bounced Franklin County 17-5 in a Roanoke Valley District game as Shelley King give up four hits and two earned runs. King also homered and knocked in three runs for the Patriots (4-7, 2-0). Franklin County is 5-6, 1-1.

In Bedford, 1993 Group AA champion Rustburg shut out Liberty 5-0 as Katie Phillips struck out 10. The Minettes (5-4) got six hits off the junior, with Melissa Dooley and Tandy Gordon each contributing a pair of singles.

In Martinsville, North Cross slugged Carlisle 29-12 in a Blue Ridge Conference game as winning pitcher Blair Calvert went 5-for-5 with three doubles, two triples and seven RBI. Lisa Betts also had four hits for the Raiders (6-3, 4-0). Carlisle is 3-3, 2-2.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Lynchburg, North Cross defeated Heritage 3-0 in the Southwest Virginia Soccer Classic on goals by Mark Wise, Parker Moore and John Prillaman. The Raiders (7-1-2) face E.C. Glass today. The Hilltoppers lost to Blacksburg 2-1 in the other game Friday.

At River's Edge, Roanoke Catholic defeated Magna Vista 3-1 as Shane Duddy scored two goals and freshman Mark Buchy had the other. Catholic is 4-5.

In Bedford, Mike Leftwich scored the game's only goal, off an assist from Lee Fisher, and goalkeeper Chris Gardner made 14 saves as Liberty nipped Staunton River 1-0 in a Seminole District game. Liberty is 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the district; while Amherst County is 0-5-2 overall and in the league.
