HOWARD U. PRESIDENT LEAVES FOR U. OF TEXAS

The embattled president of Howard University, one of the nation's top black universities, was named president of the University of Texas at Dallas, a published report noted.

The announcement came as Howard trustees were contemplating whether Franklyn G. Jenifer should be forced to resign before his contract ran out, The Washington Post reported.

Jenifer, 55, will become the first black president of any of the 15 University of Texas institutions.

Jenifer became president at Howard in 1990, and his efforts to reshape the university prompted criticism. - Associated Press
