Betty Hatfield of Union Hall is a finalist in the largest quilt competition in the nation, the American Quilter's Society Show and Contest. Hatfield's quilt, ``New York Skyline,'' is competing this weekend in Paducah, Ky., with 400 of the world's finest contemporary quilts for $75,000 in total cash awards.
Model railroads
The Virginia Museum of Transportation will house the largest display of working model railroads in Virginia at its Model Mania on April 30-May 1.
Dealers of model railroad supplies and memorabilia from all over the country will be at the event. And musical artists will sing ballads of train wrecks and travels throughout the weekend.
Model Mania's hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. Admission to the event, at 303 Norfolk Ave., Roanoke, is $4 for adults and $1 for children 3-12.
Ferrum watercolors
Ferrum College will present its 9th annual Watercolor Workshop on May 16-20. California watercolorist Christopher Schink will teach it.
Schink, an elected member of the National Watercolor Society, has written ``Mastering Color'' and ``Design in Watercolor Painting Techniques.''
He will also present a lecture on May 16 at 4 p.m. on ``The History of Watercolor'' in Stanley Library Auditorium.

Art classes for kids
The Art Museum of Western Virginia will hold three summer classes for children.
``New MultiMediaMania!'' is for ages 7-10. Students - beginner or advanced - will work with a variety of media and concepts. It meets from 2:30-4 p.m. June 21-24 for $63.
``Monster Claymation'' is for ages 11-14. Students will create their own monsters from clay and develop a claymation videotape with a storyline. It is from 2:30-4:30 p.m. July 12-15. The fee is $73.
``Positively Painting Projects'' is for ages 7-10 and stresses basic techniques of painting with many materials. The class will meet from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 9-12. The fee is $63.
