JOHN VOIT, REPUBLICAN

John Voit, 37, grew up in Roanoke in a "blue-collar, working-class neighborhood" along Williamson Road. He graduated from Roanoke College with a bachelor's degree in economics and urban studies and went on to get his master's degree in public administration from Georgia State University.

In 1982, he went to work for a brokerage firm in Washington, D.C. Then he moved to Atlanta to work as an assistant manager for Fleet Financial Group.

He later worked for the U.S. Census Bureau in Atlanta before returning to Roanoke in 1991.

Now he teaches part-time at Virginia College and owns some investment property, including the old Grand Exchange building just off the Roanoke City Market.
