The apparent winner, Rock Harris of Yadkinville, N.C., had illegal cylinders. That moved Howell, who is from Christiansburg, up from second place. Also disqualified was Ronnie Byrd of Dublin, who crossed the finish line fourth. Byrd's car was too light.
In the official top 10, Tam Tophan, Rick Cook, Haven Lawson and Eddie Walls followed Howell.
Malcolm Fink of Salem earned the third weekly Curtis Turner Memorial Hard Charger Award for Saturday night's Late Model Stock race.
Fink may be the comeback story of the year at the NASCAR-sanctioned facility. In the fall, while competing in a Late Model Stock Car race, Fink suffered a heart attack, droveto the pit area and was rushed to a hospital.
He later underwent successful bypass surgery, but then suffered a mild stroke after being released from the hospital. Fink underwent extensive therapy and early this year was given clearance by his doctors to return to racing.
In Johnson City, Tenn., the Roanoke Star White under-10 and under-12 teams and the Roanoke Star Green under-13 team won their respective divisions at the Johnson City Soccer Invitational. The Star under-11 White, under-13 White and under-14 Green teams finished second in their divisions.
Harry Hamilton and Adam Padgett each scored seven goals as the under-12 White team outscored its opponents 23-1 in round-robin play.
Steven Morse was the star for the under-10 White team, holding opponents to two goals in three games as Star White scored 14.
Zac Bain scored three goals as the under-13 Green team beat East Tennessee 4-3 and Chattanooga 3-1, then routed Bristol 7-2 in the final.
The under-11 White team used outstanding defense by Brad Newton, Peter Fleck and Joe Buchy to defeat the Knoxville Conquest and Nashville Steam, but lost to the Chattanooga Generals 3-1 in its final game.
Landon Moore had the only goal for the under-13 White team in a 4-1 loss to Chattanooga, Tenn.
Ryan McHugh scored the lone goal for the under-14 Green team, which lost to the East Tennessee Falcons 4-1.
