TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Winkie Adams says she believes it's important for her fourth-graders to really get to know the history of their state. And if it takes dressing up like Thomas Jefferson to get her point across, well, that's exactly what Adams did. "They listened real well that day," she said.

Adams, whose favorite subject to teach is social studies, says she wants her Roanoke County pupils to know their roots. "They need to know their past, how they came to be what they are," she said. The class's study of Virginia history is culminated by "Colonial Day," when crafts people come to the school to display their skills, and the pupils dance the Virginia Reel and feast on a Colonial luncheon.

Adams, a 20-year teaching veteran, says she wants her pupils to enjoy learning as much as she enjoys their "zest for life." "When Mrs. Adams teaches, I learn a lot of things. She doesn't make it complicated like other teachers," said the pupil who nominated her.

Married and the mother of three, Adams enjoys camping, volleyball and reading.
