BLEVINS, Squire Commodor, (``Tommy""), 80, of Roanoke County, died Saturday, April 23, 1994, in a local hospital. Tommy was a retired superintendent of Wiley M. Jackson Construction Company, a member and deacon of Melrose Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Alice Blevins; and only son, Thurman C. Blevins. Surviving are his wife, Sarah M. Blevins, Roanoke County; one grandson, Mark Walton Blevins, Winston-Salem, N.C.; one granddaughter and her husband, Rhonda and John Foulkes, Oakton; one daughter-in-law, Norma Jean Blevins, Salem; stepson and wife, Douglas and Virginia Williams, Roanoke County; two stepgrandchildren, Eric and Chad Willi ams, Roanoke County; five brothers, Lee Blevins, Chesil Blevins, Bill Blevins, John Robert Blevins, all of Marion, Rev. Charles Blevins, Chilhowie; four sisters, Mrs. James (Pearl) Stamper, Mrs. Keith (Bertha) Hopkins, both of Marion, Mrs. George (Polly) Murray, Chilhowie, Mrs. Don (Nancy) Martin, Castleberry, Fla.; sister-in-law, Marie Thornburg, Roanoke; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, April 25, at Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke. Memorials may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association.
BUCKINGHAM, Phyllis Mankin, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, April 25, 1994, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. (Buck) Buckingham. Phyllis was a longtime member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church, a member of the Williamson Road Women's Club, and the Oakland Garden Club. Surviving are her son, Richard D. Buckingham, Roanoke; granddaughter, Christina Buckingham, San Francisco, Calif.; grandson, James Buckingham, New Orleans, La.; niece and nephew-in-law, Jane and Charles Stowe, Roanoke. Phyllis leaves other nieces; great- nieces; great-nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel 3 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. Alton M. Washington officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel.
CULBRETH, Stanley C. Sr., 68, of 4815 Winford Road, Greensboro, N. C., died Sunday, April 24, 1994 at his home. A native of Stedman, N. C., he was one of ten children born to Munsey and Ida Culbreth. He graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill in 1950, after serving in the U. S. Navy on a submarine in the South Pacific during WWII. He retired to his farm in 1988, after serving 28 years as the President of the Greensboro Merchants Association & Credit Bureau. Previously, he was the chief executive of the Danville Virginia Merchants Associatoin and an executive in the Durham Merchants Association. In 1977, he was elected Chairman of Associated Credit Bureaus (the national trade association of credit bureaus) and was very dedicated and active throughout his years in that organization. He was involved in many civic and community organizations such as the Greensboro Kiwanis Club, Methodist Men, The Greensboro Sports Council, and Starmount Forest Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Frankie Culbreth; son, Rusty Culbreth, Ormond Beach, Fla.; daughter, Karen Culbreth, Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Inez Bloodworth, Fayetteville, N. C., Joy Morrison, Greensboro, N. C., Beverly Crawley, Roanoke; brother, Bill Culbreth, Stedman, N. C.; and grandchildren, Lance and Collins Culbreth, Ormond Beach, Fla. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church. DeWITT, Elizabeth Woody, 88, of Rocky Mount, formerly of Franklin County, died Sunday, April 24, 1994, in Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem, Va. Born August 25, 1905, she was the daughter of the late George and Annie Woody. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the late Lewis P. DeWitt. She enjoyed quilt making and flowers and had a great love of and for people. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Sue D. and Gary Woods, Atlanta, Ga.; one son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Sandra DeWitt, Roanoke, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Trindle and Emily Woody, Sontag, Va.; one brother-in-law, George English, Glade Hill, Va.; six grandchildren and their respective spouses, Kadi Woods, Wytheville, Va., Bill Woods, Bluefield, Va., Kari and Andy Martin and Beth and Steve Jaekie, Nashville, Tenn., Jenny and Tracy Barnett, Roanoke, Va., Susan DeWitt, Richmond, Va, and one great-grandchild, Abigail Leigh (``Abby"") Barnett, Roanoke, Va. FAVILLE, Mark Ward Sr., 78, of Roanoke, died Monday, April 25, 1994, at his residence. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Retired project engineer from the Norfolk & Western after 41 years of service in the Motive Power Dept. Mr. Faville had a major role in the restoration of the Norfolk & Western 611 Steam Locomotive. He was a former member of the Virginia State Guard. Surviving are his wife, Norris Staples Faville; son and daughter-in-law, M. Ward Jr. and Michele (Mickey) Faville, Blacksburg, grandson, Mark W. HALE, Margaret Bell Russell, 82, of Route 2, Speedwell, died Sunday, April 24, 1994, at her residence. She was the widow of John W. ``Tom'' Hale. She is survived by four daughters, Frances Fowler, Betty Funk, Jenny Hale, all of Speedwell, Arkie Johnson, Daytona Beach, Fla.; three sons, Gene R. Hale, Russell Hale, both of Speedwell, Joe Hale, Wytheville; 22 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 1994, in the Speedwell United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Stuart and the Rev. Patricia Edwards, with interment in the church cemetery. The remains will be placed in the church one hour before service time. JENKINS, Walker E., 68, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, April 24, 1994 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Carroll County, the son of the late Monty Lee and M artha Doshia Jackson Jenkins. He was the former owner of the downtown motor lodge in Pulaski, Va and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A former employee of the state of Winnemucca, Nevada, Mr. Jenkins was also a businessman with interests in radio and tv repair, music and pawn shop, installation of translators for transmitting tv signals and satellite cable tv. He was also a former radar technician for Philco and the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Martin. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mae Jenkins; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Judy) Spraker of Pulaski; three sons, Max Jenkins of Marion, Leon Jenkins of Dallas, Tx, Grady Jenkins of Pulaski; four grandchildren, Gregory Wayne Spraker, Missy Spraker Andrews, Angie Jenkins Kistler, Charlene Jenkins Laile; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Kistler and Paul Kistler, Jr.; one sister, Icy Jenkins of Pulaski; special friends, Leon & Mae Pierce of Winnemucca, Nevada. McKITTRICK, James A. Jr., 79, of Radford, died Sunday, April 24, 1994, at his residence. He was born October 10, 1914, in South Carolina to the late James Asa McKittrick Sr. and Sarah Johnson McKittrick. He was a retired Baptist minister, who served in Tucson, Ariz., Monahans, Texas, and Virginia. He was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Jane H. McKittrick, Radford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Carole McKittrick, Salem, Paul and Penny McKittrick, Dublin; one sister, Alice Mansfield, Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Charles McKittrick, Greenville, S.C., Robert McKittrick, Stoney Point, N.C., Harold McKittrick, Wheelersburg, Ohio. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Steve, Joy, Danny, and Darrin McKittrick. MILTON, Artie Plasters, 64, of Route 2, Ridgeway, died Sunday, April 24, 1994, in the Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She is survived by her husband, Thomas D. Milton, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Barry (Susan) Kanode, Martinsville; one son, Thomas D. Milton II, Sacramento, Calif.; her parents, John and Rosa Lee Plasters, Meadows of Dan; four sisters, Mrs. Jimmy (Nadine) Gilbert, Stuart, Lucille Bowman and Jane Clifton, Floyd, Mrs. Steve (Shirley) Meade, San Angelo, Texas; one brother, Billy Wayne Plasters, Meadows of Dan; five grandchildren. Mrs. Milton was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 25 of Stuart, and was Past Matron. She was executive manager for Tupper Products Sales. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Plasters Cemetery in Vesta with members of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 25, conducting the graveside services. THOMPSON, Robert J., 47, of Lynchburg, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 1994, after a long illness. He was born on September 28, 1947, in Lynchburg. He was the son of Mrs. Geraldine Thompson and the late Mr. Theodore Thompson. He devoted his life to a loving and devoted family, caring and sharing concerns for many. Robert was educated in Lynchburg Public Schools and was a graduate of Dunbar High School and A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. He was employed by Armstrong Furniture Company of Appomattox. He is survived by six children, two devoted children, Karim and Kara Thompson of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Theodoria Rashada of Maryland, Mrs. Gail Golson of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Mr. Gary Thompson of Saudi Arabia; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Mosley; a devoted friend, Mrs. Annie Jones; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. WHEELER, Gordon Christopher, (``Chris""), 23, of Lexington, died Sunday, April 24, 1994, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington. He was born June 2, 1970, in Lynchburg, Va. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Buena Vista and was employed at Bonded Fibers. Chris was an excellent athlete and the idol of his younger brothers and sisters. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Nancy and Nathan Sensabaugh of Buena Vista; his fathe r and stepmother, Gordon H. and Teresa Kay Wheeler of Rutherfordton, N.C.; three sisters, Annah Marie Twitty and Rebecca Ann Wheeler, both of Buena Vista, and Melissa K. Wheeler of Rutherfordton, N.C.; two brothers, Shaam Edmund Wheeler of Buena Vista and Tory Scott Wheeler of Rutherfordton, N.C.; his girlfriend, Jody Albritton of Buena Vista; his grandparents, Alvin and Jane Coleman of Buena Vista; great-grandmother, Ethel Coleman of Buena Vista; two uncles, Gary Coleman and Claude Wheeler, both of Buena Vista; an aunt, Linda Milliner of Buena Vista; stepgrandparents, Doris and Eldridge Wheeler; two nieces and one nephew, and many, many friends.
