ROANOKE HONORS TOP ATHLETES

THE MAROONS select Dustin Fonder their male athlete of the year and retire Hilliary Scott's number.

Roanoke native Dustin Fonder was selected Roanoke College's male Athlete of the Year and Hilliary Scott had his number retired Monday at the school's Student-Athlete Appreciation Night.

Fonder, a former soccer standout at North Cross School, was the 1993 ISAA Division III National Field Player of the Year. He was also a four-time member of the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference and All-South Region soccer first-teams.

Fonder set school records this season for goals (22), assists (20) and points (64) in a season. He led the Maroons to the ODAC championship and their first NCAA tournament appearance. The senior was also the starting point guard on the Roanoke basketball team that went 26-2.

Scott, a senior from Lynchburg, was a two-time All-American in men's basketball and was the 1994 ODAC Player of the Year. His number - 21 - is the seventh to be retired in Roanoke men's basketball.

Kristie Workman was named women's Athlete of the Year. The senior point guard led the Maroons' basketball team to four consecutive ODAC championships and NCAA appearances and a 96-15 record in four years.

Workman was a first-team All-ODAC selection this year and set school assist records for a game (13), season (207) and career (439). She also set the record for steals in a season (133) and tied the record for steals in a game (10).

Kevin Martin, a member of the men's basketball team, received the Paul W. Rice Award, a leadership award presented to a senior student-athlete who has made a significant contribution to campus life.

The award is in honor of Paul W. Rice, a 1939 graduate of the college and one of the men's basketball team's "Five Smart Boys." He died last August at the age of 76.

Darrell Craft and Liz Florence were honored with the Michael Murphy Award for the student-athletes who have demonstrated extraordinary perseverance in accomplishing his or her academic and athletic goals.

Craft, a senior golfer, overcame a serious diving accident while at William Byrd High School.

Florence, a junior member of the women's lacrosse team, is battling her second occurence of breast cancer. She ranks third in the ODAC in scoring with 4.11 points.
