Van Pelt's second-inning home run, his ninth of the season and 23rd of his career, tied Travis Morgan's all-time school record for home runs (set from 1988-91).
Chad Langrehr (3-2) pitched eighth innings, allowed six hits and struck out eight in picking up the win. Reliever Billy Goodrich took the loss for VMI (18-27).

Washington and Lee is four shots behind leader Randolph-Macon after the first 18 holes of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference golf championship at The Crossings in Glen Allen.
Randolph-Macon shot a 306 and is followed by the Generals (310), Hampden-Sydney (313), Guilford (320), Lynchburg (322), Roanoke (329), Virginia Wesleyan (332), Bridgewater (356) and Emory and Henry (372).
Washington and Lee's Pearce Smithwick and Scott Miller each shot 75 and are one shot off the lead shared by Hampden-Sydney's Berk Jolly and Randolph-Macon's Steve White.
Smithwick, a senior captain for the Generals, placed third in the ODAC tournament last year but has not played since injuring a rotator cuff on March 16. The 36-hole tournament concludes today.
VMI was awarded sole possession of the men's Southern Conference track and field championships after a scoring error was detected, the conference announced Monday.
The meet was held April 22-23 with VMI and Appalachian State finishing in a tie with 131 points each.
A review of the scoring by Appalachian State coach Al Fereshetian revealed that a point had been awarded to the Mountaineers for a sixth-place finish in the pole vault that should have gone to Marshall.
The corrected standings put VMI in first place with 131 points, followed by Appalachian State, the two-time defending champion, with 130. East Tennessee State was third at 108.
