PRINCE WILLIAM DROPS SALEM 4-3

The Salem Buccaneers, traveling a rocky road of late, stayed on that path Monday night in a 4-3 Carolina League loss to the Prince William Cannons. It was the opener of a four-game series between the teams.

Carmine Cappuccio scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs when Salem reliever Sean Evans uncorked a wild pitch.

It was Salem's ninth loss in its past 11 games.

The Bucs (6-12) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jay Cranford's single drove in Ramon Zapata. The Bucs made it 2-1 in the fifth on consecutive two-out doubles by Marcus Hanel and Daryl Ratliff.

The Cannons (10-8) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning off back-to-back Salem fielding errors. Salem tied it in the sixth inning when Jeff Conger singled to left field, scoring Chance Sanford.

Steve Worrell (1-0) picked up the win and Evans (0-1) took the loss.

The teams continue their series in Woodbridge tonight at 7:30.
