EX-GRID STAR AT MCCLUER DIES IN CRASH

A one-vehicle accident Sunday in Glen Maury Park claimed the life of a former Parry McCluer High School all-state football player.

Chris Wheeler, 23, was pronounced dead at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington.

Three other men who were riding with Wheeler were injured. Stephen Wayne Gibson remained hospitalized; Daniel W. Higgins - the driver - and Billy Wayne Higgins were treated and released, according to the Buena Vista police.

Wheeler was the quarterback for Parry McCluer when the Fighting Blues won Group A Division I state championships in 1986 and 1987. He was All-Timesland in football in 1987 and also was named all-state in Group A by both The Associated Press and the Virginia High School Coaches' Association.

Wheeler played quarterback in the 1988 East-West all-star football game in Lynchburg. He also was a member of Parry McCluer's baseball and basketball teams.

His younger brother, Shaam Wheeler, was one of the key players this past year for a Parry McCluer team that made the Group A Division I playoffs.

The police said none of the four men was wearing a seat belt.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Buena Vista.
