BYRD WHIPS NORTHSIDE 9-2

Chris Carr pitched a four-hitter, striking out 12, and undefeated William Byrd hit four home runs in a 9-2 Blue Ridge District baseball victory over host Northside on Tuesday.

Northside (7-3-1, 1-2) stole five base and is 66-for-72 this season.

In other baseball:

Greg Stubblefield of Rockbridge County struck out Salem's Bryan Monroe with a runner on second base in the top of the seventh to preserve a 7-6 Blue Ridge District victory on the Wildcats' diamond.

Kevin Davis homered and had four RBI, Doug Kenney was a home run short of hitting for the cycle and had four RBI and Michael Price struck out nine as Cave Spring crushed William Fleming 14-7 in a Roanoke Valley District game on the Knights' field.

James Fisher struck out eight and Jeff Jones followed suit with a two-hitter as Craig County took a doubleheader at Highland County 7-1 and 4-0 in the Pioneer District.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Jamie Bell scored twice as host North Cross whipped Giles 4-0.

Patrick Henry stayed on top of the Roanoke Valley District standings with a 4-0 victory over William Fleming.

Lee Updike and Andrew Bailey had two goals each as Salem routed Glenvar 7-0.

\ SOFTBALL: Ashley Moore's solo home run keyed a three-run sixth inning as Lord Botetourt beat visiting Alleghany 9-7 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Laura Houston went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs as North Cross romped to a 9-2 Blue Ridge Conference victory over visiting Hargrave Military Academy.

Natalie Campbell and Evie McAllister combined for seven RBI as William Fleming outlasted Patrick Henry 21-16 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Tamasa Adams and Tracy Doupnik provided the pitching and the hitting as William Byrd routed visiting Northside 11-2 in a Blue Ridge District game.

In Lynchburg, Cindy Jones went 4-for-6 with a triple in a losing effort as Roanoke Valley Christian was swept by Holy Cross 8-2 and 4-3 in the Blue Ridge Conference.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: Attackman Jay Reynolds scored all all five of Vinton's goals - giving him 26 for the year - including the game-winner in the third overtime as the home team edged Patrick Henry 5-4.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Christy Hinman had a hat trick in Roanoke Catholic's 5-0 victory over William Byrd.

Mary Jennings scored two goals and assisted on a third as North Cross came from behind to beat Stuart Hall 3-1 in a Blue Ridge Conference game.
