In all of1993, there were 10 highway fatalities in Franklin County.
Donna A. Millsap, 33, and James W. Millsap were passengers in a tractor-trailer traveling south on U.S. 220 near Virginia 619, according to state police. At 11:18 a.m., the tractor veered off the right side of the road and flipped over, killing both almost instantly.
State police said they are unsure why the tractor-trailer ran off the road.
Millsap's husband, James B. Millsap Jr., was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday night, according to a nursing supervisor.
Last week, three people died in two accidents within 24-hours. On April 19, Willard H. Williams was killed when his car flipped over on U.S. 220. Michael A. Smith and David R. Trout were killed April 20 when Smith's car crossed Virginia 636 and struck another car.
No common factor links the fatal accidents that have occurred since the beginning of this year.
