``The fire is totally contained, though not considered controlled,'' said Donna Wilson, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson National Forest. ``Snags are still smoldering, but the area is cooling off.''
About 40 people were working on ``mopping up'' the fire, which includes cutting down still-smoldering trees and establishing a fire line. Some firefighters were released Tuesday afternoon, and crews from the Newcastle district of the Jefferson National Forest will continue cleanup.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigators suspect a campfire or a cigarette, Wilson said.
