DRIVER FACES CHARGE AFTER FATAL ACCIDENT

The driver of the vehicle that killed former Parry McCluer High School all-state football player Chris Wheeler was charged with involuntary manslaughter Tuesday.

Daniel W. Higgins, 20, was driving through the Glenmar Park area of Buena Vista, a 15-mph zone, Sunday night. According to Buena Vista Lt. Marshall Brockenbrough, Higgins went through a yield sign too fast to make a curve and veered into an embankment. The vehicle flipped several times and all four passengers were thrown from the car.

No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt.

Wheeler was the quarterback for Parry McCluer during its two-year state championship winning streak in 1986 and 1987. He was All-Timesland in football in 1987 and was named all-state in Group A by both The Associated Press and the Virginia High School Coaches' Association.

Although there were no alcohol violations charged in the incident, Brockenbrough said, "alcohol was a factor in the accident." None of the four men wore a seat belt.
