The fire was reported around 9:45 p.m. Bob Milliron, a National Park Service ranger, said that the fire had burned about five acres. At midnight, the fire still had not been contained.
Several Roanoke County fire departments were at the scene, and other departments were being called. There was talk of bringing in a bulldozer to dig trenches to try to contain the fire.
Firefighters set up a command post at the Mill Mountain overlook on Four Mile Loop, off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
