Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, Charlotte, N.C., parent of Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Roanoke with operations in Clifton Forge, Dublin, Martinsville, Norton and Bristol, reported a first-quarter net loss of $701,000, equal to 8 cents per share, compared with earnings of $1.3 million, or 15 cents per share a year earlier. Before the impact of an accounting change, the company said earnings were $1.5 million, or 16 cents per share, for the just-ended quarter. Net sales for the quarter were $163.8 million, up 6 percent over year-earlier $154.3 million.
Carmike Cinemas
Carmike Cinemas Inc., Columbus, Ga., operator of Salem Valley 8, Tanglewood and Valley View Mall movie theaters in the Roanoke Valley, reported that net income for the first quarter rose to $1.7 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with $869,000, or 11 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenues increased 57 percent to $67.4 million from a year-earlier $42.9 million.
Coastal Corp.
The Coastal Corp., Houston parent of ANR Coal Co. and Coastal Coal Sales Co. of Roanoke, on Tuesday reported first-quarter earnings of $81.1 million, or 73 cents per share, up 224 percent over $25.0 million, or 24 cents per share, a year earlier.
Operating revenues for the quarter were $2.70 billion, up 2 percent from a year-earlier $2.65 billion.
Coastal said its coal segment reported operating profit of $24.2 million for the quarter, up from $23.1 million in last year's quarter.
Georgia Bonded Fibers
Georgia Bonded Fibers Inc., Newark, N.J., operator of a fiberboard and foam products plant in Buena Vista, reported net sales of $12.5 million in its third quarter ended March 31, up from $11.1 million a year earlier.
The company reported net income of $482,000, or 31 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $256,000, equal to 16 cents per share, in last year's third quarter.
