SOFTWARE PIRACY COSTS UP IN '93

Worldwide losses from pirated business software edged up to $12.8 billion in 1993 from $12 billion the year before, according to an industry group representing some of the country's largest software companies.

However, the higher figure doesn't necessarily stem from an increase in pirated products because the group surveyed 54 countries last year but only 38 in 1992.

In fact ``the percent of pirated software has gone down a bit,'' Robert Holleyman, president of the Business Software Alliance, said Wednesday. ``And, the dollar losses have gone up.''
