MADD Chairwoman Brenda Altman said the officers were nominated by their departments. Awards were presented to members of local police departments, the Virginia State Police, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the National Park Service.
"These officers were phenomenal," Altman said. "We're so lucky to have them out there looking out for us."
The following officers from local police departments were honored:
Patrolman Billy Smith and Deputy Steve Brooks, Bedford; Patrolman Timothy Taylor, Rocky Mount; Robert DeWindt Jr., Franklin; Lt. Lynn Frith, Boones Mill; Cpl. Richard Estes, Henry; Patrolman Mark Hendrix, Danville; Cpl. K.N. Isom, Pittsylvania; Officer B.P. Balmer, Lynchburg; Officers R.S. Fuller and C.H. Reynolds, Roanoke; Detective Walter Young, Salem, and Officer Dallas Stump Jr., Vinton.
From the Virginia State Police:
Trooper D. Dwayne Tuggle, Amherst-Campbell-Lynchburg office; Trooper Travis Chattin, Bedford County; Trooper J. Michael King, Craig County; Trooper James Semones, Franklin County; Senior Trooper Ralph Carroll, Henry County; Trooper Joe Diamond, Montgomery County; Trooper Kenneth Johnson, Pittsylvania County, and Trooper Tim Steele, Roanoke County.
Sgt. A. Steven Pike from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and Ranger Robert Milliron from the National Park Service were honored as well.
"These awards are not just for the people out there giving tickets." Altman added that the emphasis was placed on officers who devoted themselves to education efforts.
