The budget, which was approved unanimously Tuesday, is up $2.4 million, or about 5 percent, from the current year's amount. The extra revenue is coming primarily from increased state funding for county schools.
County taxpayers will continue to pay a tax of 60 cents for every $100 in real estate they own, and $1.67 per $100 of assessed value for personal property.
County employees will receive a 3.5 percent salary increase for the 1994-95 budget year, and teacher pay raises will average 4 percent.
Over the objection of one supervisor, the board also approved a $32.7 million school budget, which includes $12 million in local funds.
The school budget includes a local funding increase of $141,824 that the School Board had requested. County Administrator Macon Sammons Jr. had not included the increase in the budget he proposed to the board several weeks ago. The board restored the money to the school system at a recent work session.
Much of the budget increase is earmarked for improvements to school facilities.
Supervisor Hubert Quinn voted against adopting the school budget after the board decided to include funding for roof repairs at Rocky Mount Elementary School. Quinn said the money should be withheld until bids are made on the project.
