U.S. financial markets were closed Wednesday for the national day of mourning for former President Richard Nixon. There was no trading of stocks, corporate bonds, government bonds, commodities, futures, options, mutual funds or money markets.
Trading is to resume today. (Financial tables will return to the Roanoke Times & World-News business pages with Friday's editions.) Also delayed until today was the Commerce Department's report of durable goods orders for March.
Lambert wins top award
John Lambert Associates, a Roanoke marketing communications firm, on Wednesday was presented the Virginia Public Relations Conference's award for the best public relations campaign in Virginia during 1993. The firm was cited for its campaign for Roanoke Gas Co., which resisted the city of Roanoke's attempt to acquire some of its assets. The Lambert firm won first place in the crisis management category for the same campaign and won first place in the multifaceted campaign category for its work on the city of Martinsville's downtown revitalization plan.

Cox to offer Music Choice
Cox Cable Roanoke said Wednesday it will offer Music Choice, a 31-station music programming for residential and business subscribers, beginning May 2. The commercial-free, 24-hour music service is operated by Digital Cable Radio Associates, a Horsham, Pa.-based partnership of several U.S. cable operators and other investors. For residential customers, the service will cost $8.95 a month plus installation of $18. For businesses, the service costs $24.95 a month plus installation.

Chesapeake elects Fox
Chesapeake Corp., a Richmond-based forest products company with operations of its Chesapeake Packaging Co. division in Roanoke, on Wednesday said its board of directors has elected J. Carter Fox chairman of the board. Fox was also reelected president and chief executive officer, a position he has held since 1980.
Fox replaces Sture Gordon Olsson, who announced earlier that he was retiring as chairman effective Wednesday. Olsson was elected chairman of the board emeritus.

GE shareholders OK 2-for-1 split
General Electric Co. shareholders on Wednesday approved a two-for-one split of the company's common stock and authorized increasing from 1.1 billion to 2.2 billion the number of shares outstanding with a par value of 32 cents per share vs. the current value of 63 cents.
To facilitate the stock split, share owners also approved an increase in the Company's authorized common stock from 1.1 to 2.2 billion shares with a par value of $0.32, versus the current par value of $0.63.
"This action," said GE Chairman John F. Welch, Jr., "reflects our confidence in both the short- and long range prospects for GE."
Approval for the split and share increase was given by more than 98.6 percent of share owners voting either by proxy or in person at the annual meeting of share owners held here. Today's approval marks the third two-for-one split of GE stock since 1983. The last split was in 1987.

AEP plans new services
American Electric Power Co., Columbus, Ohio , parent of Roanoke-based Appalachian Power Co., said Wednesday it intends to remain the supplier of choice for its customers in a future that will bring heightened competition among utilities for energy sales.
AEP Chairman E. Linn Draper, Jr. told the company's annual meeting of shareholders that the utility holding corporation will seek to provide new kinds of value-added services to build customer satisfaction.

Mize Supply Co. of Waynesboro, with branches in Roanoke and Covington, has merged with Industrial Supply Corp. of Richmond, which has a branch in Lynchburg. The companies, both distributors of tools and supplies to industrial plants and businesses, were owned by the late Lloyd B. Mize.
