Dogwood Festival set for Saturday in Vinton

The 39th annual Vinton Dogwood Festival will be held Saturdayin downtown Vinton.

Among the festivities planned is a parade featuring over 115 units and led by Grand Marshall George Lindsey, better known as Goober from "The Andy Griffith Show."

Other events planned for the day are: the CMT Dogwood Festival Distance Run, beginning at the Farmer's Market Stage on Lee Avenue; an antique car show at Maple and Lee Avenues, and a Corvette Shop on Lee Avenue; children's activities, craft show and art show, all at the War Memorial grounds; and a glaucoma screening at the Vinton library.

There also will be live entertainment, including the Smith Mountain Lake Barbershop Chorus and Star City Forte, both appearing at the War Memorial Stage, and After Six, Fat Ammon's Band and the Roanoke Valley Community Band, all performing at the Farmers' Market Stage.

The Vinton branch of First Virginia Bank is also giving a free Lunch on the Lawn Friday at the bank from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Guild accepting entries for quilt block contest

The Lake Quilters Guild at Smith Mountain Lake is now accepting entries for its quilt block contest, titled "Water, Water Everywhere."

Entries may be traditional or contemporary, in patchwork or applique. The deadline for entries is Sunday.

First prize is $25, and all entries will be displayed June 3 through 4 at the Lake Quilters' Show at Bethlehem Methodist Church, Virginia 122 in Moneta.

Entry forms will be available at area fabric shops, or by calling Helen Ostertag, (703) 297-4133.

May 28 benefit to raise funds for cancer patient

The Dana Garman Benefit, a fund-raiser for a 33-year-old cancer patient, will be held May 28, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Catawba Community Center.

A rummage sale, auction, raffle drawing, arts and crafts and bake sale, live music and children's activities will be featured. Items for sale and volunteers are needed for the day of the benefit.

Monetary donations may also be mailed to the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Craig County, P.O. Box 399, New Castle, VA 24127.

Garman, mother of three small children, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, has undergone surgery and chemotherapy and is awaiting a bone marrow transplant. Insurance has denied coverage of the procedure which costs $100,000 to $150,000.

Walkers raise more than $19,000 for MS

The MS WALK for multiple sclerosis recently held in Roanoke raised $19,160 in cash and pledges.

Volunteers guided 210 Roanoke Valley walkers along the route.

Money raised will help provide support services to valley multiple sclerosis sufferers in areas of counseling, information and referral, symposiums, medical equipment and research funding.

Cave Spring recreation group elects officers

Mike Morris recently was elected president of the Cave Spring Recreation Foundation for 1994-1995.

Other officers are: Dwight Bogle, vice president; Terri Langford, secretary; and Randy Garland, treasurer.

David Carter, Joe Colosimo, Roy Creasy, Randy McFarland, Barbara Sharrer and Dennis Young will serve on the board of directors.

K of C honors 4 valley rescue squad members

The Knights of Columbus, Roanoke Council 562, recently honored four rescue squad members at its' annual Distinguished Public Service Awards banquet.

The honorees are: Craig McCown, Roanoke Emergency Medical Services Inc.; Eddie Chitwood, Roanoke County Fire and Rescue; E. Ray Houff Jr., Salem Rescue Squad Inc.; and Christopher E. Stull, Vinton First Aid Crew Inc.

These individuals were chosen by their squads as those who most selflessly, vigorously and consistently dedicate themselves to the service of the Roanoke Valley community.

Bank employees get involved in community

The Card Products Customer Relations department of First Union National Bank of Virginia has started Project Unite for community involvement.

Carl Gilbert, program coordinator, said Unite stands for "Unity Neighbors Influence Through Empowerment." Angela Hooper is the project adviser for the 400 employees in the group.

The employees are divided into four committees:

Community Dedication volunteers and chairman Kim Blevins will work with a shelter for abused women, the Salvation Army and the Rescue Mission.

Youth Connections volunteers and chairman Thomas Begin have adopted Big Brothers/Big Sisters as a project and plan a "fun day in the park" for young people.

Well Care Outreach volunteers and chairman Angela Sadler will work with older people in retirement homes and at Catawba Hospital.

Excellence in Education volunteer and chairman Alfred Dowe have adopted Forest Park Elementary and Lucy Addision Junior High schools and will undertake a book drive.

Museum offering two summer camps for kids

The Art Museum of Western Virginia will offer two camps for children ages 7 through 10 this summer.

The Animal Camp, scheduled for July 25 through 29, will include a series of art projects using animals as subjects. Campers also will visit Mill Mountain Zoo, a farm, and will create masks, origami, animal paintings and kites.

Camp Mardi Gras, set for Aug. 1 through 5, will consist of special projects including the creation of art based on the sounds of jazz, and a visit to an authentic Cajun restaurant.

Camp sessions will be held in the museum's studio at 20 Church Ave. S.E. from 10 a.m. to noon. The registration fee is $78 for the general public and $68 for museum members.

A limited number of scholarships may be available to Roanoke residents.
