The fifth annual ``The Good, the Bad and the Downright Unbelievable'' boss contest was judged by NBC's ``Today Show'' co-host Katie Couric, Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Ill.) and Tracey Groomes, a marketing manager for Corning Inc.
Finishers in the Unbelievable category:
The doctor who demanded his nurse return to the office immediately, even though she'd just found her children's babysitter dead on their couch.
The supervisor who not only allowed but endorsed sexual harassment against women. He got a promotion.
Finishers in the Bad category:
The law firm that canceled a pregnant associate's insurance shortly before the birth of her child because the pregnancy wasn't part of the firm's business plan.
The section chief at a federal medical institute who forced psychiatric exams on a secretary for refusing to participate in sexual harassment. She was proclaimed unfit for duty before the examinations.
And, to motivate bosses around the world, the finishers in the Good category:
The small business owner who always welcomes children at work, lets workers make their own schedules and picks up the tab on work-related college courses for employees.
The city engineer who has endured threats and sabotage because he helped the women on his staff by ridding the department of disparity, reprisal and harassment.
