WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Benefit horse show

NEW CASTLE - A horse show to benefit the athletic department at Craig County High School will be held Sunday at the Craig County Fair Grounds in New Castle. The event, sponsored by the high school's Rocket Booster Club, is the fifth annual event. It will begin at 1 p.m.

Talk to the animals

Animal communication specialist and author Penelope Smith will give a lecture in Roanoke on May 6 and a workshop in Shawsville on May 7-8. Both will deal with ``How to Communicate With Animals.''

The lecture, which will be at Holiday Inn Tanglewood, will focus on the emotional and spiritual nature of animals, how they communicate and understand people's words and behavior, what prevents humans from understanding their messages, and how to improve relationships among all species. The cost to attend is $10.

The workshop, which will be held at Walnut Grove in Shawsville, will include how to get in touch with animals telepathically and how to increase receptivity to mental-spiritual communication. The fee is $145.

For more information or reservations, call Karen Waldron at 268-1100.

MS Bike Tour

The MS Bike Tour, which will travel 150 miles from Charlottesville to Stonewall Vineyards, will be from June 11-12.

Riders are sponsored by friends, family and colleagues who pledge money for the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. A minimum of $150 in pledges is needed to enter. The MS Society provides riders with food, lodging and support throughout the tour, and prizes are awarded for top pledgers and challenge teams.

For entry and pledge information, call the Blue Ridge Chapter of the National MS Society at (804) 971-8010.

Join the EarthCorps

EarthCorps volunteers are being sought to work with field scientists in two-week field research projects in 23 states and 60 countries. The projects, sponsored by EARTHWATCH, a 22-year-old international nonprofit organization, include wildlife management, archaeology, public health and ecology.

Volunteers support research and cover food and lodging expenses with tax-deductible fees averaging $700 to $2,400 for two weeks. No special skills are necessary; training is done in the field.

For information, call (800) 776-0188 or write EARTHWATCH, 680 Mt. Auburn St., P.O. Box 403EA, Watertown, Mass. 02172.

Millinery madness

HEADS UP! New York milliner Ruth Hunt will return to Roanoke for a pre-Mother's Day hat show on Saturday, May 7. The show at the Jefferson Club, 213 S. Jefferson St., will run 3-7 p.m., with an informal fashion show at 4 p.m. $5 admission includes a buffet. RSVP to 563-0994 or (201) 626-8899.

Tour duEclipse

The Science Museum of Western Virginia will hold a ``Tour duEclipse'' on May 10 to view the solar eclipse from mid-morning to mid-day in Market Square in downtown Roanoke. About 83 percent of the sun will disappear from view on this day, and there will not be another solar eclipse in the United States until 2017.

The museum also is selling safe-viewing glasses for $1 in the museum's Science Shop. The purchase also serves as admission to the May 7 SKYWATCH program at 7 p.m. in the Hopkins Planetarium. The program will cover methods of safe observation of the eclipse, what viewers will see and when they will see it.

For more information, call the museum at 342-5710.
