After a stint in the Army, he returned to Roanoke and entered the construction business in 1952. For a time, he was with Hayes Seay Mattern & Mattern; now he runs his own company, John H. Parrott & Associates.
Among the building projects Parrott has worked on: Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Center in the Square and Advance Auto Distribution Center.
For 28 years, Parrott has served on two key government bodies in the Roanoke Valley.
Starting in 1967, he served a decade on the city's Planning Commission, which deals with zoning and other land-use matters.
Later, he was appointed to the governing body of the Roanoke Valley Regional Landfill - and has spent 18 years as chairman.
Parrott jokingly says his children have introduced him as "the chairman of the dump," but he points out that this joint effort with Roanoke County and Vinton is one of the valley's best examples of regional cooperation.
This body will go out of business when the landfill in eastern Roanoke County closes this spring and the new one at Smith Gap in western Roanoke County opens. Parrott still will be dealing with trash, though. He's been appointed to the new authority that will govern the Smith Gap landfill.
Parrott is married, has three children and two grandchildren.
