WESTVACO TO BUILD IN CZECH REPUBLIC

Westvaco Corp. said Thursday it will build a $25 million printing and package converting plant in the Czech Republic. The 90,000-square-foot plant will be 75 miles east of Prague and serve expanding consumer packaging demand in Central Europe, the company said. Construction will begin within three months with the plant scheduled to open in the fall of 1995.

The decision to build the machine follows the start-up last October of a new bleached paper board machine at Westvaco's mill at Covington. The mill has been exporting its paper board to packaging converters around the world for 25 years.

Jack Hammond, senior vice president of the bleached-board division, said building the European plant is a natural extension of the company's existing business.

The plant will initially employ about 100 people.
