NORFOLK SOUTHERN WORKER A `HERO'

A Norfolk Southern Railway maintenance foreman from Iaeger, W.Va., has been selected as a recipient of the Carnegie Medal for heroism.

The medal is given to civilians who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.

Timothy Chafin, the NS foreman, was selected for saving the life of Shauna Dotson, 19, who was trapped by traffic on a railroad crossing.

Chafin, 32, saw a train bearing down on Dotson and ran to her aid. He put himself between the train and truck to open the driver's side door and pull Dotson, who had frozen at the wheel, from the truck. He carried her away from the truck seconds before the train struck and destroyed it.

Along with the medal, Chafin will receive a $2,500 grant from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.

Chafin is one of 18 people selected to receive the medal in the commission's second award announcement of the year. Three of those selected lost their lives during their heroic actions.
