EARNINGS

WLR Foods Inc., Broadway, Va., poultry processor and hostile takeover target of Tyson Foods Inc., on Thursday reported earnings of $1.3 million, or 12 cents per share, for it third quarter ended April 2. Earnings rose from $1.26 million, or 10 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales for the quarter totaled $171.1 million, up 14 percent compared with the year-earlier $149.6 million.

Sara Lee

Sara Lee Corp., Chicago parent of knitwear mills in Martinsville and a hosiery distribution center in Salem, reported net income of $152 million, or 30 cents per share, in its third quarter ended April 2, unchanged from last year's third quarter. Sales were $3.7 billion, up 11 percent over last year's $3.3 billion.

Hercules

Hercules Inc., Wilmington, Del., operator of the Army arsenal in Radford and a packaging plant in Covington, reported first-quarter net income of $52.3 million, or $1.28 per share, compared with a net loss, after accounting changes, of $194 million, or $4.47 per share in the same quarter last year. Sales for the latest quarter were $680 million, up from $672 million a year earlier.
