EXPLOSION INJURES 3 W.VA. MINERS

Explosives at a Fayette County strip mine detonated prematurely Thursday, injuring three people, officials said.

The area involved in the blast at the Costain Coal Inc. mine remained dangerous late Thursday, said Terry Farley, a spokesman for the state Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training.

Dwayne Pizzino, 43, of Beaver was in critical condition with a broken right leg and chest injury at Charleston Area Medical Center, said hospital spokesman Gary Chernenko. Fred Taylor, 42, of Rainelle was hospitalized with a head injury, but his condition was not immediately available.
