16-YEAR-OLD GIRL KILLED IN CRASH

A 16-year-old Auburn High School student was killed Thursday in a head-on collision in Floyd County.

Danielle Renee Blankenship of Riner was driving south on Virginia 8 near Floyd at approximately 3 p.m. According to Trooper A.M. O'Conner, Blankenship veered into the northbound lane, hitting a sewage tank truck.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck was not injured. O'Conner said Blankenship and the truck driver were wearing seat belts.

O'Conner said he did not know why Blankenship veered into the other lane of traffic.

"It was one of the worst accidents I've ever had to cover," O'Conner said.
