KIWANIS CHOOSE `LAYPERSON OF THE YEAR'

The administrative director at Blacksburg's Cooper House, NANCY ALEXANDER, has been named the Gunnar Teilmann Layperson of the Year. Each year, the Montgomery County Kiwanis Club honors a layperson who has "selflessly given of their experience, knowledge, time and love to help others."

The award is named for the late Gunnar Teilmann, a Kiwanis member and pastor at Blacksburg United Methodist Church. The Rev. Teilmann's widow, Wava Teilmann, made the presentation Thursday at a luncheon at Wesley Foundation.

A member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, Alexander has held leadership positions in the Coalition for Justice in Central America, The Coalition for Community, and in local and regional bodies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

Several area churches will observe the NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER Thursday.

Virginia Tech Memorial Chapel invites all to visit throughout the day for private prayer. A special prayer time from noon until 1 p.m. is being sponsored by the Virginia Tech Staff Bible Study group. Call 231-6240.

Church Women United invite women in the Blacksburg area to gather for the annual MAY FELLOWSHIP DAY service Friday, 11 a.m., at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, Church Street. A luncheon follows. Infant care is available. All are asked to bring a salad dish.

Begun in 1933, May Fellowship Day emphasizes unity while focusing on important local issues. Offerings support the work of Church Women United in Blacksburg.

Carolina Hinsons will appear tonight at 7 p.m. at Blacksburg Pentecostal Church, Warren and Center streets.

The Original Easter Brothers, The Farley Brothers and The Gospel Strings will appear at Floyd County High School Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Free admission for children under 12 attending with parents.

The Rev. LISA KLEIN formally joins the staff as an associate pastor of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Blacksburg, Sunday at 4 p.m. She will divide her time among parish education, youth leadership and campus ministry. Klein, 35, comes from Winterset, Iowa, where she has been pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church for the past five years.
