WHITE HAS BACKGROUND IN BUSINESS, SERVICE

William White, 47, grew up in Hot Springs, Ark., and attended the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he earned a degree in business administration.

White married a Roanoke native, Joyce Wright, and moved to Roanoke 23 years ago. They have a son, 24, and a daughter, 17.

He worked for Peat Marwick in Roanoke for five years, then started his own accounting firm in 1980. The firm, Saunders & White, now has offices in Roanoke, Richmond and Norfolk.

White served on the Roanoke School Board before he was elected to City Council four years ago.

He also has been a member of the city's Economic Development Commission and Industrial Bond Authority. He has served on the the Northwest Revitalization Committee and was appointed by then-Gov. Charles Robb to a state health services commission.

He says he's been an active Democrat ``forever.'' He has been a member of the city Central Democratic Committee for five years.
