ROBB FARES THE BEST IN VOTER POLL

Virginia's U.S. Senate candidates are either unacceptable or unknown to many voters, but incumbent Democrat Charles Robb fares the best, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University poll.

Republican contender Oliver North, meanwhile, said he expects three or four candidates, including an independent Republican such as Marshall Coleman, in the November election.

Half of the 657 registered voters interviewed by VCU said North is unacceptable as a candidate.

Almost as many, 49 percent, said former Democratic Gov. Douglas Wilder is unacceptable to them. Wilder is considering an independent bid.

Robb, who is seeking his second term in Washington, was found unacceptable by 34 percent.

``Both North and Robb have troubles in their own back yards. More than a third of Republicans say North is unacceptable, and nearly a fourth of Democrats say Robb is unacceptable,'' said VCU political scientist Scott Keeter, the poll director.

The poll, conducted April 8 to 27. It has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
