W&M INCREASES TUITION SLIGHTLY

The Board of Visitors at the College of William and Mary approved a 2.9 percent tuition increase Friday for Virginia students, the lowest increase in 15 years.

Out-of-state students will pay 7.3 percent more for tuition starting this fall.

The increases bring tuition to $2,808 for in-state students, up from $2,730 this year, and $11,720 for non-Virginia residents, up from $10,920.

For the past two years, William and Mary has imposed double-digit tuition increases. But school officials said additional funding approved this year by the General Assembly and Gov. George Allen for state-supported colleges and universities reduced the pressure on tuition rates.

The college plans to raise faculty salaries an average 3.4 percent. Also, some dormitories will be renovated with a student room-rate increase of 5 percent, bringing room costs to $2,318 next year, up from $2,208 this year.
