Turner, who worked in the classified department for more than 30 years, was honored several times by the Southern Classified Advertising Managers Association.
In 1957, he was chosen as Classified Advertising Manager of the month of September, then as the Manager of the Year in 1960. Turner served on the association's board of directors, as vice president, then, in 1960, as president.
Turner was born in Madison, N.C., but spent most of his life in Roanoke - except for four years when he served as a sergeant major during World War II. Turner retired from the Roanoke Times in 1975, but was a consultant to the classified department for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Pratt Turner, a son, Philip Turner, and a twin brother, Charley Turner. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
