HUNTERS URGED TO HELP BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS

President Clinton stepped up his campaign to ban assault weapons Saturday, urging hunters in an open letter to help outlaw firearms "designed for the battlefield."

In a separate mailing to newspaper editors, Clinton labeled the guns as weapons of "mass destruction" and provided "profiles" of the targeted guns designed to show their harmful capabilities.

The Senate has approved legislation that would outlaw assault weapons, and a vote is expected this week in the House, where proponents of the measure are still short of support.
