ROANOKE POLICEMAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT

A Roanoke city police officer was killed in a freak accident Saturday afternoon near his home in Rockbridge County.

Barry S. Ramsey, 48, died at 4:50 p.m. at Stonewall Jackson Hospital after suffering severe chest injuries when a tractor he was riding fell down an embankment on Virginia 631 (Long Hollow Road), according to state trooper Joe Rader.

Ramsey was across the street from his house and was backing the farm tractor down a friend's driveway around 3:30 p.m. One of the tractor's wheels slipped and it dropped off and hit a ditch line on Long Hollow Road, Rader said.

An investigation was continuing, but Rader said state police believe Ramsey was thrown from the tractor. Ramsey said he did not know if the tractor landed on top of Ramsey.

Lt. Ron Carlisle of the Roanoke Police Department said Ramsey had worked with the police department for more than 20 years. Ramsey recently was working in downtown Roanoke in traffic enforcement, Carlisle said.
