CAMPBELL SEEKS TO HAVE BIG SOUTH SUIT DISMISSED

The Big South Conference breached its contract with Campbell when the league's executive committee voted in 1993 to approve Sunday play, the school said in response to a $300,000 suit filed by the league.

The Big South has sued Campbell in federal court for failing to give two years' notice before withdrawing from the conference. The notice is required by conference bylaws.

Campbell announced Jan. 17 that it was joining the Trans America Athletic Conference on July 1. Without Campbell, the Big South would lose its automatic berth in the 1995 NCAA men's basketball tournament. The conference is seeking to keep Campbell in the league and wants $300,000 in damages.

But Campbell says the 1993 executive committee vote for Sunday play voided its responsibility to give two years' notice. It seeks to have the lawsuit dismissed, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Saturday.
