ROANOKE WRESTLER WINS NATIONAL TITLE

William Fleming graduate Keno Shepherd won the 105.5-pound freestyle weight class at the USA Wrestling Espoir National Championships in Winston Salem, N.C.

Shepherd pinned Gordon Mobley of Shelby, N.C., 3 minutes, 55 seconds into the final. Shepherd trailed 4-3 when he scored a three-point takedown that led to the pin. Mobley had won the Greco-Roman national title Friday.

Shepherd was a 1992 and 1993 All-Timesland wrestler and was runner-up for Timesland wrestler of the year in '92.

The tournament was for wrestlers age 20-and-under.

In Christiansburg, the host school swept the boys' and girls' titles at the Blue Demon Relays.

In the boys' competition, Christiansburg won nine of 16 events to finish with 126 points and easily outdistance second-place Laurel Park (59 points). Andra Beasley led the way for the Blue Demons, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the triple jump and running the first leg for the winning 400 relay team.

Aaron Payne won the 800 for Christiansburg and joined Jeff Custer and Robby Turner as the only athletes in school history to break 2 minutes in the event. Payne's time was 1 minute, 59.5 seconds.

In the girls' competition, the Blue Demons (113 points) won 10 of 16 events to finish 50 points ahead of second-place Giles. Maureen Jackson (shot put and discus) and Pam Jones (long and triple jumps) were the double-winners for Christiansburg.

Virginia's Simon Cooke is in first place after two rounds of the Cavalier Classic golf tournament in Charlottesville, and Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp is third.

Cooke shot two rounds of 69 and is at 6-under-par 138 on the par-72, 6,820-yard Birdwood Golf Course, one shot better than second-place Stewart Cink of third-ranked Georgia Tech. Sharp is at 4-under 140.

Georgia Tech leads the team standings by 17 shots over 15th-ranked Augusta with a 563. Virginia is third with a 587, and Virginia Tech is fourth with a 589. Six of the 15 teams didn't complete the first round Friday because of high winds and rain, forcing them to play two rounds Saturday.

Tech's Sean Farrell is at 147, David Havens at 150 and Curtis Deal at 152. The final round is today.

In Hot Springs, Virginia captured four of five better-ball matches to take a 23-7 lead over West Virginia after the opening round of a weekend golf tournament.

At stake is "Ye Ole Feudin' Stick," a replica of one of Sam Snead's earliest woods.

Seniors Bob Moyer and Jim Alexander of Virginia began the day with a 6-0 victory over Jack Forbes and Richard Chensworth on The Homestead's Cascades course.

Greg Bales and Keith Decker of Virginia followed with a combined 6-under-par to beat Evans Harbour and Danny Warren 6-0.

The lone West Virginia victory came when Larry Spotloe and Hobe Bauer won 5-1 over Mike Smith and J.P. Leigh, cutting the Virginia lead to 13-5.

The Virginia team finished with 5-1 victories in the next two matches when the twosomes of David Partridge and Charles Green, and Tom McKnight and Mike Krulich each won easily.

Today's competition will be individual matches.

West Virginia won the tournament last year, but Virginia leads the series 6-3.
