The Sharks, a 3-year-old franchise affiliated with the ECHL's Roanoke Express, are the first team since the 1975 New York Islanders to advance to the second round in their playoff debut. They will meet the Maple Leafs, beginning Monday, in Toronto.
It marked the second consecutive year the Red Wings have failed to advance past the first round, losing in Game 7 at home each time.
Detroit outshot the Sharks 11-5 in the third period but never seriously challenged Arturs Irbe, who faced 30 shots in the game.
Detroit goalie Chris Osgood, who faced 17 shots, cleared the puck right to the stick of Baker along the left boards near the blue line. Baker, without hesitation, fired a shot from just inside the blue line at the 13-minute, 25-second mark.
The Red Wings pulled Osgood for an extra attacker with 47 seconds remaining, but they managed only one weak shot before the final horn.

\ Canucks 4, Flames 3: In Calgary, Alberta, Pavel Bure's second goal of the game, on a breakaway at 2:20 of the second overtime, gave Vancouver a victory over the Flames in Game 7 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
With the victory - the Canucks second consecutive overtime triumph - Vancouver advances to a conference semifinal series against the Dallas Stars, beginning Monday.
Bure took a lead pass from Jeff Brown and beat Calgary goaltender Mike Vernon as the Canucks became the 10th team since 1987 to rally from a 3-1 deficit to win a playoff series.
The Canucks forced the seventh game when Trevor Linden scored with three minutes remaining in overtime in Thursday's game in Vancouver.
Vancouver's Greg Adams forced Saturday's overtime by scoring with 3:37 left in the third period. He got his stick on a puck that just trickled past Vernon.
Theoren Fleury, with a pair of goals, and Ron Stern scored for the Flames, who last won a playoff series in their 1989 Stanley Cup championship season. Geoff Courtnall also scored for the Canucks.
