W&L WOMEN EARN NATIONAL BID IN TENNIS

Washington and Lee's women's tennis team, ranked second in the nation, earned a second seed and a first-round bye for the NCAA Division III national tennis tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The Generals (21-0) will play on May 11 against the winner of a first-round match between Kalamazoo and Williams (Mass).

Junior Marilyn Baker and sophomore Julie Ayers qualified individually for singles competition and as a doubles team.

Jay Purcell, a senior guard from Blacksburg, was named Virginia Tech's Most Valuable Player during the Hokies' team banquet.

Purcell led Tech (18-10) with a 13.3-points-per-game average and 91 assists. Also honored were senior center Jimmy Carruth (Most Inspirational Player and co-Most Improved Player), senior forward Corey Jackson (co-Most Improved Player), senior guard Donald Corker (Best Defensive Player) and freshman forward Ace Custis (Merit Award, based on performance grading).

Dave Braine, Virginia Tech's athletic director, and other Hokies staff members will be on hand today when the Hokie clubs of Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Radford hold their annual Spring Fling.

The Fling begins with a noon golf tournament at Blacksburg Country Club and continues at the Best Western Red Lion Inn in Blacksburg with a social hour at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:15 p.m. and a program at 8 p.m.
