CBS has held discussions about forming a new professional football league that would play Sunday afternoons.

According to today's New York Times, the league would have the backing of such corporations as Federal Express, Anheuser-Busch and the Walt Disney Co.

CBS said the chief organizers of the new league include Mike Lynn, former general manager of the Minnesota Vikings and commissioner of the World League, and Fred Smith, chairman of Federal Express. Also reportedly involved is Jim Spence, former president of ABC Sports.

CBS executives told the Times the idea behind the league was to find corporations closely associated with cities that would be the home teams in the new league. Under that format, Federal Express would back the team in Memphis, Tenn., and Anheuser-Busch the team in St. Louis.
